Universal Design for Learning

Differentiation teaching is key when maximizing student achievement. Universal Design for Learning is the exact same as differentiation. As a future librarian, we will be responsible to lead the entire school community which includes students and teachers. Among the diverse population, universal design for learning’s framework is an effective way to maximize success in the school community. However, don’t be alarmed, the guidelines for UDL are informative and broken down into three parts engagement, representation, and action & expression. These guidelines are translated into the “why, what, and how” of learning. The engagement part of learning allows diversity among the different learning styles in each student and offers options to demonstrate their learning styles in different ways. The representation part of UDL shows the curriculum content in different ways. Finally, the action and expression part of the UDL, offers options that engage students and keep their interest.  I would like to become more proficient with all the websites ranging from Flipgrid, Instagram, Podbean, Twitter, Fotojet, Pixton, Infogram, and Facebook. These would be great in fusing together the three components that the UDL offers and entails. These would be great to capture engagement and keep their interest. In addition, offer different ways to show the material in different ways to capture the interest. Finally, these websites offer different ways to express your knowledge through creativity among all these websites and apps. The UDL is a structure framework that allows for Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences come to implementation. Differentiation of teaching is key to meeting the guidelines implemented by the Universal Design for learning. The guidelines help the educator promote, implement, modify, and execute differentiation that would ultimately promote student learning opportunities for all.

↠Which of these guidelines am I already using?

As an elementary teacher, I feel that I’m already taking part in the representation part of the UDL. The “what” of learning, I feel that I use multiple styles of teaching that include Total Physical Response, Technology such as Quizlet, Kahoot, and Flipgrid. However, I could polish up my skills by implementing the new websites and apps and help engage the students with the different uses of technology. Nowadays, students are engaged through technology as the innovation of the world is technology.

↠Which of these could I add right now to my teaching practice?

I could add action and expression parts to my teaching practice to offer many students with options that engage them and keep them interested in the topics. Since the student population is diverse this would help create academic success by offering different approaches and keep them engaged. As I already offer many engaging technology apps and websites. It becomes not exciting after a while however, by offering a diversity of websites and apps to inner channel their creativity this would be great in implementing my teaching practice.

↠Which of these looks great, but I might need some help to implement?

The engagement part looks great however, this is the area I would need the most help with that consists of students approaching different learning tasks in different ways and demonstrating their knowledge in their own different creative way. I feel that by offering the option it would create the domino's effect with the other two parts of the UDL. If I would be able to offer in my teaching approach the “why” and demonstrate in different ways how to learn this would be the puzzle that helps fuse the other two parts together to reach learning opportunities for all.

Overall, after learning about the Universal Design for Learning guidelines they all tie together nicely to create a successful learning environment and opportunities for all. Among the student population where I teach that consists of English language learners I feel that these guidelines would work wonderfully. We currently follow the Fundamental Five approach however, I feel that since we are headed into a world where it is cultivated and driven with technology it is important that we are exposed to different approaches. Such as, the wonderful apps and websites that can be used to incorporate into our teaching and expose students to the ability to be engaged, explore, and create products that let their knowledge channel through. This would create students working at the highest level of Bloom’s taxonomy.
