Social media has been the innovation of the century with everyone around the world having information at the tip of your fingers. Whether be Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram their is a piece of being able to socialize through a website or application. Which one is your favorite, comes down to the question? Below you will learn about some advantages and disadvantages of each.
Facebook is an oldie but a goodie. Most users are adults and while many young teens think it doesn’t meet their needs. They still use it because of either having connection with their families or friends. In the education world, some librarians utilize to promote and stay connection with the community. This helps with communicating with the community about events that forthcoming, current events, and educating the community with what is evolving in reference to education. Some pages below compared to each other have more followers than others. However, consistency is key. As librarians, we have to stay relevant and consistent with meeting the needs of the community. You might want to let the community know about upcoming events such as parent night to help children gain access from home to some databases. Reading literature of helping your child become life-long readers. In addition, making the page more appealing would help drive traffic into it so parents could be looking forward to following the school page for information. On the contrary, not posting regularly would not make it appealing to parents to gain access to the page and follow it. In addition, to making it all text and not posting relevant recommendations that will impact their child.
Twitter is the most utilized because of its versatility its microblogging setup gets to the point and intrigues the audience to want to click to your content. I feel that twitter’s user-friendly approach captivates teen and adult audiences and makes it successful. I feel that the minimal text that is used to either draw or disengage the reader of the content that is being promoted within the tweet line. After following some educational technology experts and going through their tweets, these accessibility to such information is key to becoming a successful librarian or educator. These power educational technology people are on top of the most up to date educational information, and one that is in the position where we lead the library media program is essential. We have information at our fingertips of research on programs, education, and technology. Some big names in educational technology include Mr. Alan November which he posts towards teachers and professional development. Instagram is a wonderful tool to promote book fairs, authors, and book reviews, anything that comes to mind that utilizes pictures or pictures.
